Christians are raised and brought up believing that we are supposed to put God first. You may have even said this aloud when speaking to others. Now think about your day from the time that you wake up in the morning till the time you go to sleep. Do you wake up and thank God for having another day? Do you give praise to him? Do you converse with him? In your daily activities do you think about God and how he wants you to be?
These questions are easy to ask and to tell others to put God first. My husband and I were conversing about what was talked about at Church and he said to me, “you put God first in your daily life.” I thought about it and I told him no. When I said no, my husband didn’t know how to react. He said yes you do. I repeated and said, no I haven’t put him first.
I wake up in the morning to the sound of my alarm. I usually press snooze a couple of times before I actually get up, enjoying the comfort of my bed. I then jump right into my morning routine. I used to read my bible in the morning, but summer has been so crazy that I have been getting away from doing that. I get busy with work and my family through the day. When I go run errands in my car, that is when I remember to pray. After that I get busy with other things. It’s dinnertime and that’s when we pray as a family. We usually try to have family time in the evening. We try to go for a walk or a bike ride. After that it’s already time for us to get ready for bed. We pray with our son before we go to sleep.
My whole day I was trying to pencil God in here and there. God is not an appointment. God wants to be a part of our daily lives. Think about something that you use daily and frequently. For me, it’s my phone and my laptop. If I am using those things more than God than I am not putting God first.
“In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success.” Proverbs 3:6
We all need a reality check to see if we are doing what we say and what we believe. For myself, I know I have been slacking. I am glad my husband brought up the conversation because I need accountability. I am human, life gets busy and I (a lot of times) forget what is most important. When life gets crazy busy and you almost feel like you are drowning; ask yourself, are you putting God first?
